This tool from Crown is supplied with two cutters as shown, one with rounded end and one with square ends which can be shape modified on a grinder.
The range of patterns produced by changing cutters, lathe speed, cutter length protrusion from holder, cutting on, above or below centre, or making stationary or traversing cuts is endless. Especially effective for decorating the likes of boxes, lids, platter and bowl rims.
Most effective on end grain and suited best to hard woods and even synthetics.
